About As Good As It Gets!
Wayne Hancock is one of my all-time favorites and I am delighted to come across his live music here in the Internet Archive! Wayne "the train" Hancock's music is pure Americana. He mixes country, rock and blues with jazz, swing, western and rockabilly to create something familiar yet original. This Texan's brilliant song writing skills match one of the most unique voices. His music tends to simultaneously sound vintage and innovative.
As for this 9-20-03 Continental Club show, it's a great one. Wayne plays many of his best songs like "Miller, Jack, and Mad Dog," "Kansas City Blues," and what is perhaps my favorite, "Happy Birthday Julie." "Viper" is an old-time marijuana tune, essential for the stoners. In this show, we are even treated to his version of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." In terms of sound quality, this is perhaps the best sounding Archive show. Furthermore, this is a really long show, almost twice as long as two existing Internet Archive shows by Wayne. Considering that his albums are usually short, you get quantity and quality with this one! The line-up features: 1) acoustic guitar, 2) upright (acoustic) bass and 3) electric guitar. This show gives you a good feel of what it's like to experience an Americana Legend in a small club.
Wayne Hancock released an official live album from the same venue as this show. If you hunger for a soundboard-matix quality show, get "Swing Time." Check out his web site for details: http://www.waynehancock.com

mic stand was about 15 feet from center stage, mics 8 feet off the floor
update: the reviewer is wrong about the Swing Time album. That was recorded at the Austin Continental Club, not Houston.
